A month-long celebration of the Oak Park Area's theatrical offerings

For the first time ever, the Oak Park Area is celebrating its dynamic theater scene with Oak Park Theater Month! Presented by Visit Oak Park, the inaugural event takes place throughout the month of February 2018. Visitors and residents alike have the opportunity to choose from seven discounted performances at six different venues and sample the extraordinary assortment of theatrical offerings in Oak Park, Berwyn, River Forest, and beyond! 

Erasing the Distance: Dominican, Chapter 2 
WHERE: Dominican University Performing Arts Center
WHEN: February 22 at 7PM, February 23-24 at 7:30PM, February 25 at 3PM
ABOUT: In 2008, Dominican's Theatre Arts produced Erasing the Distance, the Dominican Chapter with Erasing the Distance (ETD), a professional theatre company that uses the power of performance to disarm stigma, spark dialogue, educate, and promote healing around issues of mental health. Erasing the Distance returns with true stories from members of the Dominican community to create a poignant and pivotal piece of theatre.

Harbur Gate
WHERE: 16th Street Theater
WHEN: February 1-2 at 7:30PM

ABOUT: Something happened at Khabur Gate, the U.S. military base on the Turkish/Iraqi border, called Harbur Gate by the Americans. Something which was never revealed. Harbur Gate is composed of three plays about three women in the combat zone linked by a single incident. In Orpheus, two Army medics apply for the Purple Heart. In the title piece, Marines Moss and Russo engage in a battle of the sexes in a truck convoy to Mosul. And in Veteran in a New Field, Michelle, a recent Veteran, meets John, a blind painter in a park.

The Collective of Concordia's Life in a Sandcastle
WHERE: Madison Street Theater

ABOUT: Two getaway weekends on the shore of Lake Michigan collide when childhood friends from two separate worlds find themselves doing battle against one another for the same fire pit at a beach resort in South Haven, Michigan. Political persuasions, economic privilege, regional proclivities, educational barriers, and a mess of cheap sirloins and pickled quinoa quiche quickly become both shields and weapons as the women do battle for the sandy square footage they feel is rightly theirs.

Love Spats
WHERE: The Nineteenth Century Club

ABOUT: Bring your valentine and let the talented Oak Park Festival Theatre do the fighting for Love Spats, a collection of scenes inspired by notable feuds between some of Shakespeare's most famous couples.

Megan Wells - Theatrical Story Teller
WHERE: Pleasant Home 
WHEN: February 16 at 7:30PM
THEATER MONTH ADMISSION: $25 with promo code OPTM18
ABOUT: Gifted Storyteller Megan Wells will entertain guests with a theatrical portrayal of Lily Texier, the first wife of prominent French composer Claude Debussy. Live piano accompaniment will enhance the performance as Ms. Wells reveals the tumultuous love affair between Texier and Debussy. Performance also includes a wine and cheese reception.

ABOUT: Based on the farcical play, Rumors by Neil Simon, showing a dinner party gone topsy-turvy. At the large, tastefully appointed Sneden's Landing townhouse, the Deputy Mayor of New York has just shot himself. As he lies bleeding in the other room, his wife is mysteriously nowhere to be found. Now, his lawyer and wife must get "the story" straight before four other couples arrive to the party.

Songbook: Steven Page and the Art of Time Ensemble

ABOUT: Steven Page, a founder and former lead of the iconic band Barenaked Ladies, joins Toronto’s highly inventive Art of Time Ensemble in an evening of seminal songs by Randy Newman, Radiohead, Elvis Costello, Barenaked Ladies, Leonard Cohen, Page himself, and others. These gems are reimagined and reinvented by some of the greatest minds in classical, pop and jazz, and delivered by a defining voice in contemporary rock

ABOUT: Peter returns to his twenty-year high-school reunion with dreams of winning back Kari, the girl he left behind after an unexpected pregnancy ended their relationship. Standing in Peter's way is Kari's bitter-as-ever resentment, her husband and the fact that Peter still hasn't grown up. As the night progresses, both Peter and Kari are led, through their interactions with a host of characters all played by a virtuosic Narrator, to face the consequences of choices made long ago and start back into life with newfound strength and bittersweet resolve.
